I graduated from Lincoln High School, Canton, Ohio and went immediately into the service with the merchant marines. I spent two years sailing on a troop ship back and forth to Europe and England. After I got discharged, I took a job at Republic Steel Berger Division as an apprentice electrician. After working there for a couple of years I realized that you were always either going to be laid off or on strike half of the time, so I figured it was time to get out.
So, I tried trucking. My father mortgaged his home to finance my first outfit. It was a new 1948 Reo and a used dump trailer. I got my own coal account at the Chase Bay Company, Chargrin Falls, Ohio soon after, and realized that this was to be my career.
I married in 1953, and my wife has become my most successful business partner. We acquired more and more business over the years, and therefore, acquired more trucks and trailers. Then the coal business in Ohio took a drastic downturn because of the high sulfur content in the coal. So we purchased an Ohio Interstate Certificate in 1968, and this turned out the be one of the best decisions we ever made.
My two sons joined the company after each graduated from college. William Logan Jr. in 1975 and Robert Logan in 1976. When they came they hit the ground running, and the company has been growing ever since. This has given me time for my two favorite hobbies; seeing my grandchildren everyday, and commercial real-estate acquisition.
Logan Trucking now has over one hundred trucks and trailers. We employ over 186 people, including some of the best truck drivers out there! At the present, we run a one thousand mile radius of Canton, Ohio; but as the past shows...you never know where it'll go from here!
